Cucumber Cooler Cocktails

It might seem like we’re quite the lush pair here at Minimalist Baker, but that really isn’t the case. We simply enjoy a quality cocktail every now and again, especially when it’s light, delicious and easy to make. This cucumber cooler is no exception.

When my boss was in town a few weeks ago, we all went out for drinks. It was the perfect evening really. Late summer, still warm enough to forgo a jacket, the service was spot-on, the live music was the best I’ve ever heard in Wichita, and the cocktails? Rather a dream.

John ordered a drink featuring cucumber slices and after one sip, I was quickly regretting my pinot noir. In fact, every time he turned to talk to my boss, I’d sneak sips. Rather sneaky, I am.

This recipe is as simple as it gets: gin, lime, mint, cucumber and tonic water. Even the novice bartender can throw this together at the amazement of onlooking guests. Plus, it’s easy to modify to suit each person’s taste, allowing you to please even the pickiest of palettes. For example, John prefers sour, I prefer sweet – bring on the sugar.

In just a few minutes we had a lovely cocktail on our hands. And it seemed the longer we sipped on it the better it became as the flavors were given more time to marry.

What does it taste like? A sophisticated limeade. An upgraded mojito. Cucumber water on steroids. Just try it, you will love.

  • Tonic water

  1. In a chilled glass, add the lemon slices, lime slices, cucumber slices, and gin.

“ Each year, we dedicate World Cucumber Day to this noble fruit and give it all the attention it deserves. This year, Hendrick’s Gin turns the mighty cucumber into a key to unlock a much-needed escape from the unconventional – whether it’s searching for a special cucumber in a virtual Hendrick’s world or getting creative with cucumber garnishes.

“All that’s left is for curious minds to join us in the wondrous possibilities World Cucumber Day has to offer. A cooler is usually a sweet, fruity, sometimes bubbly cocktail, especially in the summer. A cooler will be light and crisp, and sometimes have less alcohol than other cocktails.

What is the Difference Between a Cooler and and Spritzer?

A cooler is different from a spritzer because a spritzer usually has sparkling water with wine or sparkling wine, and drier than a cooler. Spritzer has a tendency to be less complex than a cooler as well.

Cucumber Cooler

When it starts to get really warm and summery , there is nothing better than a really refreshing cocktail. In comes the Cucumber Cooler. Coolers are a classic cocktail category, which is not quite as simple to define.I defined a spritzer above, but Coolers are different!

Commonly coolers consist of soda or other carbonated liquids such as tonic water or ginger ale. They also have a spirit and then herbs or fruit.

In the cocktail book Recipes for Mixed Drinks (1917), Hugo R. Ensslin lists variations of Coolers, which have only the of carbonated liquid and a spirit in common with each other. In some there is citrus juice, others can have sodas, ginger beer, club soda.

How do You Muddle Cucumber?

Place the cucumber slices in the shaker, along with any fresh herbs and other ingredients that require muddling. Press the muddler gently into the cucumber slices while rotating your wrist. This will break it up the best.

This Cucumber Cooler features the flavors of cucumber, but also mint, grapefruit and the floral and herbal tones of gin along with fresh lime juice. We also added some Suze, which is a vegetal liqueur, with some citrus flavors added in, which was perfect for this cocktail!

Cucumber slices: You may want to eat them out of your drink right away, (because, hot summer and all) but don&rsquot do it! After a little time swimming in the lime juice, gin, and tonic , they seem to pickle ever so slightly, stay crisp, and are a great end of drink treat!

What Gin is Good with Cucumber?

Adding cucumber to your gin cocktails brings a fresh sometimes floral note, and so it typically goes with fresh, smooth and summery gins. Hendrick&rsquos is a great choice, any London Dry, or 135 East Gin!

Embrace the whimsy – celebrate the cucumber with Hendrick’s Gin

Hendrick’s Gin is celebrating the green power fruit in your fridge, the humble cucumber.

14 June is the whimsical World Cucumber Day, a day we say huzzah to the lissome versatile vegetable (why yes, it’s a fruit and a vegetable).

Hendrick’s Gin takes its relationship with the cucumber seriously. Along with 11 botanicals, the gin is infused with the odd combination of cucumber and rose. The super-premium gin is made in Ayrshire, Scotland in copper stills in small batches of 500 litres at a time. Served unapologetically with a cucumber garnish, the good folks at Hendricks’ are introducing some new styles to slice and dice. Try a cucumber curl, a sphere, or learn how to make the perfect ribbon, a style they call an unusual tongue.

Unlike earlier years when bars participated in the celebrations, this year’s celebration is at home. Whip up a Hendrick’s and tonic or one of their new concoctions, take selfies and post on Instagram. Don’t forget to tag @hendricksginsea and @crazycocktailcat. The photo competition and augmented reality filters go live from 14 June to 21 June.

Charmaine Thio, Southeast Asia Brand Ambassador for Hendrick’s Gin, comments, “Each year, we dedicate World Cucumber Day to this noble fruit and give it all the attention it deserves. This year, Hendrick’s Gin turns the mighty cucumber into a key to unlock a much-needed escape from the unconventional – whether it’s searching for a special cucumber in a virtual Hendrick’s world or getting creative with cucumber garnishes.”

Hendrick’s Gin World Cucumber Day bundles are available at selected online shops like Lazmall, Shopee and Paneco. Each bundle includes a 700ml bottle of Hendrick’s Gin, complimentary Tonic Water and Hendrick’s Gin recipe cards.

Practical Tips for Making the Thyme, Cucumber & Gin Cocktail

Make Cucumber, Coriander & Thyme Simple Syrup

Making a cucumber simple syrup is probably the most complicated thing about this recipe and it’s super easy.

Simply bring equal parts water and sugar to the boil, turn down the heat, add some chopped cucumber, whole coriander seeds and a couple of sprigs of thyme and leave on a low simmer until the sugar has dissolved in the liquid.

Leave to cool and steep for 10 minutes before straining.

There is something about the understated flavor of cucumber that's instantly calming. It has just enough oomph to awaken your senses. That cool, refreshing flavor pairs incredibly well with lime which brightens it up a just a bit.

Add gin to the mix, especially one like Hendrick's (which is on the floral, vegetal side), along with a splash of bubbly seltzer water and you're one step closer to complete bliss. By balancing soothing, cool flavors with just enough bright notes this drink is the perfect reward after a long, hot day.

Notes: To make simple syrup, combine 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Cool before using. Simple syrup will keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
