LIMA — Chip Davis’ Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour will be making a mid-week stop through Lima during its 35th-anniversary tour.
For the anniversary, Mannheim Steamroller will be playing its first Christmas album that came out in 1984 in its entirety, according to Roxanne Layton. Layton has been with the group for 24 years and plays recorder and percussion.
“All of us play an ancient instrument as well as a modern one,” Layton explained. “I will be playing the recorder and the next thing a rock beat comes in followed by a synthesized part with a lute coming in. That’s what makes it really unique, this texture of sound.”
Layton says in her time with Mannheim Steamroller, they have seen four generations coming to through their shows.
“This music is timeless. No one else is really doing exactly what we are doing, which is mixing synthesizers and ancient instruments with an orchestra and rock and roll beat to it,” Layton said. “It’s a unique sound but it’s also very family-oriented.”
If your family just can’t wait until Tuesday to hear your favorite carols, Niswonger Performing Arts Center will be hosting The Midtown Men on Sunday with their holiday hits.
The Midtown Men consists of stars from the original cast of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys” — Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony Award nominee J. Robert Spencer — making them the first vocal group formed by the principal cast of a high-profile Broadway show. “Jersey Boys” ended a record-breaking 11-year run on Broadway in January 2017.
