Neighborhoods in Boston evolve in the most interesting way. From the South End’s transition from slums to city sensation, to the Fort Point’s recent developments in luxury living, it is hard to imagine either area used to be avoided as a result of their ‘sketchy’ reputations.

Boston’s downtown crossing (also known as DTX), is in a similar transition, albeit, articulating its own trajectory towards becoming yet another unique and vibrant neighborhood. The popping up of luxury living condos, ahem…Millennium Tower, some of the city’s top restaurants and of course, the revitalization of some of Boston’s beloved theaters, are but a few of the more recent refurbishments in DTX. Perhaps one of the most exciting installments to this area is The Godfrey Hotel and the various spots for dining and drinking it has partnerships with.

Open in February 2016, this boutique hotel fits right into the new face of DTX. In keeping with its original architecture dating back to 1904, the hotel is a mixture of trendy, fashion-forward design and historical architecture. Having been bought and remodeled by Oxford Capital’s hotel management in 2013, this building has seen every iteration of DTX over the past 100 years. Impressive, to say the least!

On the dining front, the hotel has its eyes set on creating great options for the nighttime and during the day. Already up and running are its lobby bar, headed at the moment by bartender extraordinaire Alejandro. Settle in for an expertly crafted drink and conversations with someone who really knows the Boston social scene.

At any point during the day, or perhaps the first moment you wake up, head to George Howell Coffee located to the right of the lobby when you enter. The team at GH is brimming with enthusiasm and dedication to the quality of product so loved by the owner, George Howell himself. With their exclusive partnership with A and J Bakery in Salem, they have its system down.

Exquisite coffee, treated with the utmost care and selection, and beautiful artisanal baked goods. This also includes an assortment of breakfast sandwiches and tartines… all made in house. I highly recommend the avocado toast; the smoked salmon tartine and of course, its egg, bacon, and cheddar cheese breakfast sandwich with house made aioli.

Of course, the big moment everyone is waiting for is the grand opening of RUKA, the first Nikkei restaurant for Boston. Nikkei a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. Located right inside the hotel, RUKA will be outfitted with a dining room that serves social dining and a stellar cocktail program.

Although RUKA is still a few months away, the hotel itself is a perfect way to enjoy the heart of the city, with two great amenities and proximity to Yvonne’s – another excellent food concept by the RUKA team. Whether you are a Boston local, or visiting from somewhere else, The Godfrey is a perfectly convenient and high quality option from which to base your visit!
